If you are injured, take photos of the injuries as soon as possible, but make sure you get medical attention first.Try to find witnesses and their names and phone numbers.Write down everything you remember as soon as possible.Remember officers’ badge numbers, patrol car numbers, and physical descriptions.If you are arrested, ask for a lawyer immediately.Do not make any statements regarding the incident.If you complain at the scene or tell the police they’re wrong, do so in a non-confrontational way that will not escalate the situation.When you are on private property, the property owner sets. That includes pictures and videos of federal buildings, transportation facilities (including airports), and police officers. Don’t resist, even if you believe you are innocent. When in outdoor public spaces where you are legally present, you have the right to capture any image that is in plain view (see note below about sound recording).Keep your hands where the police can see them.Remember that anything you say or do can be used against you.Don’t get into an argument with the police.Of that group, 99 ended in settlements or verdicts against them or the city. In New York, you are not required to carry ID, and you don’t have to show ID to a police officer.You should ask if you are under arrest or free to leave.Police may stop and briefly detain you only if there is reasonable suspicion that you committed, are committing, or are about to commit a crime. Bad news could be a signal that we need to change what were doing to avoid danger.
